What is the platinum spot price?

The platinum spot price is the price of one troy ounce of platinum for immediate settlement, quoted in U.S. dollars. It is the number every price on this site, in our shop and at every other dealer starts from. The figure at the top of this page is the live wholesale ask (the price to buy); the bid beside it is the price we pay when you sell platinum to us. Right now platinum is $1,659.60 an ounce, down $6.06 (-0.36%) from today's open.

How the platinum price is set

No single exchange sets it. Platinum trades over the counter between bullion banks, refiners and dealers around the clock, anchored by two public reference points: the LBMA benchmark auction in London and the futures contracts on the CME in New York. Dealers like Standard Bullion trade on live wholesale quotes derived from that market, which is why our price carries a bid and an ask instead of a single figure, and why it moves every few seconds while the market is open.

What moves the platinum price

Platinum is an industrial metal first. About 40% of demand is autocatalysts, mainly for diesel engines, so emissions rules, diesel’s share of car sales and the pace of substitution between platinum and palladium in catalysts drive the price. Jewelry, chemical and glass manufacturing, and a growing hydrogen-economy demand from fuel cells and electrolysers make up much of the rest. Supply is concentrated: South Africa produces around 70% of mined platinum, so power shortages, labour disputes and mine closures there move the market. Investment demand, through bars, coins and ETFs, is the swing factor that turns a supply deficit into a price move.

Platinum is roughly thirty times rarer than gold in the earth’s crust yet has traded at a discount to gold for most of the past decade, which is why it attracts investors looking for a relative-value trade. The platinum/gold ratio is the number many of them watch.

Platinum price per gram, ounce and kilo

Precious metals are priced in troy ounces (31.1035 grams), not the 28.35-gram ounce used for everything else. One gram of platinum is therefore the ounce price divided by 31.1035, currently $53.36, and a kilogram is 32.1507 troy ounces, currently $53,357.38. The table above converts the live price to grams, kilos, pennyweights and the common coin fractions so you can value a piece of any size at a glance.

Platinum price history

Platinum spent most of the 2000s trading above gold, peaking in 2008 before the financial crisis cut industrial demand. The diesel emissions scandal of 2015 and the shift to gasoline engines, which use palladium, then pushed it into a long discount to gold. Its all-time high in dollar terms still dates from 2008. The chart carries monthly data from 1911, daily closes from 2011, and 15-minute intraday prices for the recent ranges.

Over the past year platinum has traded between $1,492.24 and $2,866.95. A year ago it was $1,644.74, a change of +0.90% to today. Its all-time high is $2,866.95, set in January 26, 2026. The performance table above gives the exact price one day, one week, one month, one year and five years ago.

Spot price vs. what you pay

Spot is raw metal in wholesale size. A coin or bar adds refining, minting, assay, distribution and the dealer's margin, and that difference is the premium. Platinum products are minted in smaller volumes than gold or silver, so premiums are a little higher than gold’s in percentage terms. One-ounce bars from major refiners carry the lowest premium; the American Platinum Eagle and Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf carry more. Liquidity is good but the buy-back spread is wider than gold’s. Every product in our platinum bullion shop is priced live off this spot price plus its premium, and when you sell to us we pay a bid tied to the same feed.

How to read the platinum price chart

The chart above is spot only, drawn as an area or line: we do not show candlesticks because platinum has no single exchange volume behind it and a candle would imply data that does not exist. The 24H, 7D and 1M ranges use our own 15-minute captures; 3M to 25Y use daily closes; MAX reaches back to 1911 on monthly data. The moving-average buttons (20 to 200 days) are calendar-day averages, so a 200-day average means the same thing on every range. Hover or touch the chart for the exact price on any date, and use the custom range to compare any two dates.

Platinum price FAQ

How much is 1 oz of platinum today?

One troy ounce of platinum costs the live spot ask shown at the top of this page, refreshed every 15 minutes in the summary and every 15 seconds in the live price. A physical 1 oz platinum coin or bar costs that spot price plus a premium for minting and distribution. The summary also gives the price of a half, quarter and tenth ounce and of ten ounces.

What is the platinum spot price?

The platinum spot price is the price for one troy ounce of platinum for immediate delivery, quoted in U.S. dollars. It is the benchmark every dealer, refiner and exchange works from. The price at the top of this page is the live ask for platinum on Standard Bullion's wholesale feed; the bid is what we pay when you sell to us.

What is the platinum price today?

Today's platinum price is shown live at the top of this page and in the summary just below it, with the change from today's open, the 52-week range and the all-time high. The summary figures refresh every 15 minutes; the live price refreshes every 15 seconds while you have the page open.

How is the platinum spot price set?

There is no single platinum exchange. The spot price emerges from over-the-counter trading between banks, refiners and dealers, anchored by the LBMA benchmark auctions in London and by futures on the CME (COMEX/NYMEX) in New York. Our feed is the live wholesale price at which we can actually buy and sell metal, which is why it carries a bid and an ask rather than one number.

What is the difference between bid and ask?

The ask is the price to buy platinum from us; the bid is the price we pay to buy it from you. The gap between them is the spread, which is how the wholesale market prices liquidity. Both are shown on this page. Most published "platinum prices" are a mid or an ask only.

Why is the price of a platinum coin or bar higher than spot?

Spot is the price of raw metal in wholesale quantities. A coin or bar adds refining, minting, assay, distribution and dealer costs, plus the liquidity of a recognised product, and that difference is the premium.

How much is a gram of platinum?

One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so the price per gram is the ounce price divided by 31.1035. The table above shows the live gram and kilogram prices. Note that a troy ounce is heavier than the ordinary (avoirdupois) ounce of 28.35 grams; all precious-metals prices use troy ounces.

When does the platinum market trade?

Nearly around the clock. Trading opens Sunday evening U.S. Eastern time in Asia, follows the sun through London and New York, and closes Friday afternoon. Our live price updates whenever the wholesale market is open; over the weekend it holds Friday's close.

What are the 52-week high and low and the all-time high?

The 52-week range is the highest and lowest platinum price over the past year from our daily record, including today's intraday extremes. The all-time high is the highest price in our full history: daily closes since 2011 and monthly data back to 1911. All three are shown in the summary at the top of this page and recomputed every 15 minutes.

Why is platinum cheaper than gold?

Rarity is not the same as demand. Platinum’s price is set mostly by industrial use, above all diesel autocatalysts, and that demand has been flat or falling while gold’s investment and central-bank demand has grown. Platinum traded above gold for most of the 2000s; the discount since then reflects those shifts, not a change in how scarce the metal is.

Can I get the platinum price as data or through an API?

Yes. The same live and historical platinum prices are published as JSON and plain text, as a history API, as an embeddable chart and as signed webhooks. See the Precious Metals Market Data page and the Gold Price API documentation. It is free with attribution.
